  • Hey guys,

Time for a little history lesson. The whole Southern/Northern Irish thing was originally about and is still fundamentally about nationality rather than religion.

The trouble began when Ireland (the whole thing) was brought into the United Kingdom about 200 years ago. Some Irish people wanted to keep their Irish identity, some wanted to stay in the UK and keep their British identity, hence the North/South divide. The South (in the Republic of Ireland) was almost completely Catholic and Irish Nationalist, whereas the North was largely Protestant and so almost completely Unionist.

So that's why there's a Republic of Ireland and a Northern Ireland. My little berg of a country has a really complicated history so it's no wonder almost everyone outside of it are confused as to what all the trouble is about.

Wait a second, isn't it Pete R's job as VP of R+D to be filling you in with these facts ;-)
